The Call of the Cows.

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:"
 Ecclesiastes 3:1

Every evening, the kids realize that their father will be home soon and head up to the barn to help.  They like to see how much they can get done before he arrives.

They work together preparing the pig slop from left-over food we get from local food-banks: old bread and expired items that we pick up once a week.

Even the cats look on in hungry anticipation.

I am down in the kitchen preparing supper when Shawn takes over, and this is what I can see out the side window.  The cows in the back pasture recognize his truck and start to wander in.

They are in no hurry as long as there is still grass to stop and nibble on.

What you don't know is that along with this sight, I hear the kids saying a sing-song, "Come on!"  ...5 second pause...

 "Come on"... 5 second pause...

"Come on"... until the cows are into the barn.  It's not annoying or my Farmer would make them stop.

  It's kind of sweet.

Actually, they learned it from him.

Eventually they get to the front pasture where Old Jake hangs out.  He calls to them during the day occasionally in between bites, just to make sure they remember that he's still around.

The whole neighborhood then remembers that he's still around.

"Hey, Jake, we missed you today."

Jake is in no hurry to get to the barn.  He's never in a hurry to get anywhere,
good Old Jake...

...until the last man's home...or the last cow.  Then he decides it's time.

 ...5 second pause... "Come on."

 "Come on."
 Have a great supper, guys.

  3. Thank you, Miss Mustard Seed! I will remember that if my own attempts are bad ones. You know how a painter is: never buy when you can try! :) I'm sure it will be sold soon enough!
Thank you, so much, Michaele! I love writing; helps me keep things in perspective sometimes.

  4. Wow, your cows are so different from our cows. When they see the truck coming, they run to get to the feed and push each other out of the way to get to it first.
I just found your blog too and enjoy reading about your life...Thanks for sharing!

  5. Thanks, Sharon! Well, our cows do come running when we feed them grain, but we are raising this group as grass fed, so they only get hay; not quite as enticing as grain, I guess. :)
