A Brief Moment in Time

"A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones."
Proverbs 17:22

What do you see when you look out the window?
(It's evening now, and the snow has melted here, but this is probably what many of you see in the morning;
and I'm pining for just a little bit of Christmas color here).

  I was encouraged by another blog to find things I am thankful for.  She put out the challenge to journal 1,000 things.  It's supposed to change one's view on life:

No, I'm not about to list 1,000 things tonight.
I'll keep it short and add to it every once in a while until I get to 1,000.
It's supposed to be based on what you are thankful for
right at the moment,
so
here goes:

1. I am thankful for a warm house: it's monstrous cold and violently windy outside.
  I wouldn't want to have lived in an early pioneer log home tonight;
or been in the American Revolution during the long winter out in tents.

2. I'm thankful for soft beds.
  I can't imagine sleeping on the ground in these temperatures: it's frozen hard;
or a straw mattress: they sound itchy.
(I think Violet's history lessons have been affecting my sense of appreciation lately.)

3. I'm thankful for my warm red slippers.
  I like slippers.
  Red ones are cheerful.

4. I am thankful for my Kitchen Aid that is making the butter for me.

5. I am thankful for sleeping children.  They are quiet when they sleep.  I can think when they sleep... thinking without interruption is a relaxing way to pass the time.

6. I'm thankful for a sleeping husband.  He is quiet when he sleeps, most of the time.  Sometimes he snores, but that's okay.  I probably do, too.
He has back problems often, so I'm especially thankful when he gets good sleep.

7. I am thankful for a husband who listens to me when I complain about things, or give him "suggestions", and he wants to do right to me and the kids.  That means a lot.  A whole lot.
  I'm not always so good at listening to "suggestions."

8. I am thankful for my sisters.  I was reminded recently that the people that we have in life are, like ourselves, temporarily here on earth; they are gifts on loan to us from God and we need to treasure them while we have them here.  You two are treasures to me.

9.  I am thankful for a Mom who shops with me and makes every adventure fun for me and the kids
while helping me load the kids in and out of their car seats;
having an endless supply of healthy snacks for them;
keeping safe and enjoyable things for Lillie to be entertained with in her tiny pocketbook,
along with a spare pacifier;
allowing them to eat in my father's impeccable vehicle at her own risk;
taking one or two of the distracting creatures in her cart so that I can shop with the ability to think
a little.
And through the hustle and bustle of the whole process, making us all laugh.

You are another treasured life.

10. I am thankful for Christmas.  It's a time of year that I remember that Jesus was a baby just like mine who keeps crying upstairs because she is getting those painful molars.
Jesus was a helpless baby
who probably cried when He was cold
or sick
or teething
because He became human for us.
  He felt what it was like to be a human.
  He understands what it means to hurt.

And He gave us Christmas not only to think of Him,
but also the others in our lives He has given us.
It's a holiday of giving
to others
as He did.
What other holiday is there
that we celebrate by giving?

For these things tonight.
I am thankful.

  1. This was beautiful! It help me put things into perspective right now with all the hustle and bustle at this time of year. I need to treasure the important things in life. I often think of Jesus as a little baby when I am rocking my little guy. It is truly amazing that He came in such humility. Have a Merry Christmas!

  3. Thank you, Kelly. :) It is amazing that Jesus came as a baby. You must be enjoying your little guy. I love how they "force" us to sit down and rock them and think. :)
    Of course, Dad, too! I'm sure he'll make it into the 1000 list. :) I was just thinking of what was affecting me that day. I feel very blessed with my family; feel like I don't exress gratitude for you all enough! If I had to list everyone I'm thankful for in the first listing, I'd be up all night! :)

  7. This is beautiful.

    When things feel overwhelming in my life, or when I just feel blue, I make myself write a 'blessings' list. It's amazing how it focuses my heart on the joy and not the sorrow.

    For some reason blogger won't let me follow you today. I want to. I love the way you think.

  10. Thank you for sharing your list. That's a wonderful idea--to write about 1,000 things for which we are thankful. It makes one realize again the simple and basic things of life and living. Merry Christmas!
