There's Just Something About It.

"Two are better than one;
because they have a good reward for their labor."
Ecclesiastes 4:9

There's just something about it:
something about being outside on a brisk day;...

something about seeing the empty pallets waiting to be filled,
so that the fire in the house won't go out on those long winter nights.

Looking at that huge pile...

of seemingly insurmountable work does something inside.

How can this all be conquered?

There's something about seeing that the one who is in charge...

and calls to "Come and help"...

is working hard too,
right beside those who have been beckoned.

There's something about the wood itself:
the smell of it's freshness,
the strength and beauty and the size of it;

something about
the sound of the chainsaw and tractor needed to cut it down to manageable size.

There's something about the process:

 it is accomplished...

in small armfuls...

 or even...

 one piece...

 at a time.

Sometimes it can be done by wagon loads:
helpful and quicker.

Sometimes there are breaks for a snack,
or a quick ride on a bike,
but don't quit.

Teamwork.

 Eventually,
the pallets are not empty anymore.

 The pile is still there:

still huge and daunting.

But it will be worked on until it is done.

The task is too large for one day,
but sometimes it takes many days.

And for tonight,

everyone can enjoy the warmth of the fire

that all helped make burn.

  1. I agree, there is something about working the 'ole woodpile, and enjoying its benefits together that brings a unique satisfaction and comradery, and instill a bit of lasting character in each who is involved, young and old

  2. This is a beautiful reminder of the simplicity that once was and still can be, when we take the time for it.

    Just lovely.

  3. Hi! I am just beyond thrilled that you found your way over to my blog and linked up to the Inspiration Friday party! This post was absolutely perfect and I just found myself getting lost for a bit on your blog...lost as in sucked in to your wonderful writing and learning more about you and your life. :-) Your most recent post about all of the craziness that is our lives as moms was just perfect for me today. I had a million things to do and yet found myself outside splashing in the mud with my youngest! I'm so happy to have met you here in blogland and hope to see much more of you in the future.
    God bless,
    Vanessa
