The $5 Gray Cupboard.

Violet's school books arrived today
and it pressured me into getting the school cupboard completed.

I was super excited when I picked this up at a yard sale for $5
a few months back.

I had been wanting a smaller cupboard with doors
for our school books this year.
I didn't like the decorative pieces on the top part of the cupboard,
so I pried them off,
not neglecting to use woodfiller for holes.

I didn't want to waste any time on sanding the cupboard,
so I used Paris Grey Chalk Paint to base coat all
except the top pieces,
which were done in Old White.

Knowing that my daughter is a child of color,
I painted the back inside wall of the cupboard a deep blue/green,
just some "Oops paint" I'd gotten and mixed together,
right on top of the dried Paris Grey.
I wiped it to make it look like a worn wash.

When dried and lightly sanded,
the cupboard was waxed with clear and then Rugger Brown.

The drawers and doors got some
fun glass knobs I found while looking for my kitchen pulls.

I'm hoping this little bit of color will be enough for her.

 There is space now,
but I have a feeling that won't last long.

The drawers add extra storage for the little things
that seemed to get lost too easily last year.

I'm sure my daughter will be so happy
about the math drill cards always being so convenient.

I can't tell you how relieved I am that it is done.

Thanks for listening to my excited prattle about my cupboard.
I feel like a kid again with a new lunch box and pencil case.

I loved that year I got the Snoopy lunch box.
What was your favorite lunch box?

  2. This is such a great idea! My son gets soo many papers sent home, and brings so much artwork into the house that gets scattered all over the kitchen counter. I'll have to look for a little school cabinet for our house!

  11. If a person who had never refinished a piece of furniture saw this post, they would immediately start looking for their first piece to work on! This is one of the nicest re-do's that I have seen. That piece was kind of ugly beforehand and most people would have passed it by. Great job. So, so lovely.
