We Hold These Truths...

 HAPPY 4th of JULY!!
The following are some patriotic photos I took around my area
and some famous quotes by the men during the Revolutionary War.

It's fun to drive around and notice how many people put out
patriotic symbols on this special day.

Thank you for stopping in,
have a fantastic holiday,
and God Bless America!

"Nothing is a greater stranger to my breast,
or a sin that my soul more abhors,
than that black and detestable one,
ingratitude."
-George Washington
- Letter to Governor Dinwiddie, May 29, 1754

"To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace."
-George Washington
- First Annual Address to Congress, January 8, 1790

"He that would make his own liberty secure,
must guard even his enemy from oppression;
for if he violates this duty,
he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself."
-Thomas Paine
- Dissertation on First Principles of Government, December 23, 1791

"The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone;
it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave."
-Patrick Henry
- Speech in the Virginia Convention, March 23, 1775

"If we can prevent the government
from wasting the labors of the people,
under the pretence of taking care of them,
they must become happy."
-Thomas Jefferson
- Letter to Thomas Cooper, November 29, 1802

"I am for doing good to the poor,
but I differ in opinion of the means.
I think the best way of doing good to the poor,
is not making them easy in poverty,
but leading or driving them out of it.
In my youth I traveled much,
and I observed in different countries,
that the more public provisions were made for the poor,
the less they provided for themselves,
and of course became poorer.

And, on the contrary,
the less was done for them,
the more they did for themselves,
and became richer."
-Benjamin Franklin
- Relating to prices and the poor, 1766

"Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom,
must,
like men,
undergo the fatigues of supporting it."
-Thomas Paine
- The American Crisis, No. 4, September 11, 1777

"It is impossible for the man of pious reflection
not to perceive in it [the Constitution]
a finger of that Almighty hand
which has been so frequently and signally extended to our relief
in the critical stages of the revolution."
 - James Madison
-Federalist Papers, No. 37, January 11, 1788

"We have no government armed with power capable
of contending with human passions
unbridled by morality and religion.
Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry,
would break the strongest cords of our Constitution
as a whale goes through a net.
Our Constitution was made
only for a moral and religious people.
It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
 -John Adams
- Address to the Military, October 11, 1798

"Whoever shall introduce into public affairs the principles of primitive Christianity
will change the face of the world."
-Benjamin Franklin
- Letter to the French ministry, March, 1778

  "Religion in a Family
is at once its brightest Ornament & its best Security.
The first Point of Justice,
says a Writer I have met with,
consists in Piety;
Nothing certainly being so great a Debt upon us,
as to render to the Creator & Preserver
those Acknowledgments which are due to Him
for our Being,
and the hourly Protection he affords us."
-Samuel Adams
- Letter to Thomas Wells, November 22, 1780

"Neither the wisest constitution
nor the wisest laws
will secure the liberty and happiness
of a people whose manners are universally corrupt."
-Samuel Adams
- Essay in the Public Advertiser, 1749

"Give up money,
give up fame,
give up science,
give the earth itself
and all it contains
rather than do an immoral act.
And never suppose that in any possible situation, or under any circumstances,
it is best for you to do a dishonorable thing,
however slightly so it may appear to you...
From the practice of the purest virtue,
you may be assured you will derive the most sublime comforts
in every moment of life,
and in the moment of death."
-Thomas Jefferson
- Letter to Peter Carr, August 19, 1785

"We have this day restored the Sovereign to whom
all alone
men ought to be obedient.
He reigns in Heaven,
and with a propitious eye
beholds his subjects assuming that freedom of thought,
and dignity of self-direction
which He bestowed on them.
From the rising to the setting sun, may His kingdom come."
-Samuel Adams
-Speech at the State House, Philadelphia, August 1, 1776

  3. Loved the pictures and the great quotes...the one that jumped out to me was from John Adams,"Our constitution was made for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." Makes me think! Those great men who were willing to give everything for freedom saw how precious it was and is. I appreciate God's Hand in the birth of our country! Happy 4th Tonya!
