A Saturday Morning.

 Mornings on the farm
are welcomed exuberantly by the animals.
 They like to eat.

There's something about the smell of a barn
that has always appealed to me.

I think it appeals to the kids, too.

It's the smell of the fresh hay,
the barn swallows chirping and fluttering about;...

watching an animal enjoy his feed is somehow cathartic.

 Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch...
steady, calm, patient.

Where does that saying come from,
"You eat like a cow."

I like the way cows eat.

Yes, I am talking about you
and I do enjoy watching you eat.
Does that surprise you?

This guy on the other hand,
in his stench and sloppering hoggishness...

 Oh, sorry.

I didn't realize you were listening.

There is something rather handsome about a pig, though,
isn't there?

It's obvious that he thinks so.

Old faithful is never far away.

The farmer is getting ready to go pick up three more calves.

The girls are going with him;
Violet was excited and found it hard to sleep last night
knowing she was going.

Lillie just said,
"I'm going.  Me, too."

Be careful with all that precious cargo.

I'll stay back and clean up the breakfast dishes.

Happy Saturday to you!

I've started a facebook page for my blog.
If you're interested, you can join me there
(the link should be over to the right).
If not, that's fine, too!

  1. i have always loved barns too. and there's nothing better on a cold winter's day than being in a barn with warm cattle or horses, listening to them munch hay...

  2. LOVE this post.

About the cows chewing, my mom used to quote a little poem to me when I was chewing gum, it went something like this to the best of my recollection:

    "The gum chewing girl
    And the cud chewing cow,
    They're alike
    Yet different somehow.
    Oh, I see it all
    Clearly now,
    It's the contented look
On the face of the cow!"

And, my hubby could put a new roof on that shed with the gaping hole - - - he salvaged a small garage which was just about that size and had an equal hole in its roof.

  3. One of my favorite things to do when I visit my fathers farm is to wander the barns. Yes, I do love the smell of fresh hay. I do miss living on the farm, although I do not miss the hard work of hay season. What a wonderful life you and your husband are creating for your children. I have so many memories right up until I was married and moved out. On the morning of my wedding day we had to chase cows back to the barn.

  4. Well, you know I liked this post! Do you guys feed out dairy calves and then sell to people you know? I know a few people around here that do that. Nice barn. I love wooden feed bunks. I love Violet's "spark".

  5. What a great post, from visiting a barn (I'm not so sure I would like the smell, however) to a daddy-daughter drive.

    Yep, that IS precious cargo!

    =)
