Screaming Grass.

It was the kind of hot that made me think
that if I leaned over and put my head close to the ground,
I might hear the grass screaming.

Hot.

Humid.

Sweltering.

But that doesn't matter on a farm.

The sun is up,
there's work to be done.

As I braved the sun's fury
to see if the Farmer would be wanting lunch anytime soon,
I spotted Violet.

Then I remembered that the fresh group of calves
had arrived that morning.

She adores cows, for some reason.
I love the dog, the cats, the horse.

She loves the cows.

She's happy because they are very calm and used to people.

"Are you hungry for lunch?"
I ask from the other side of the electric fence.

She didn't seem to hear me.

"I am going to have so much fun with these calves,"
she returns.

I head back inside the house
and prepare lunch anyhow,
hoping the rumbling they will feel in their bellies
will do a better job at rounding up the crew
than I did.

Summertime.
