The Burlap and Button Rescue

I found this little picture at the second hand store this week.

I go there to pick up old bread for our pigs,
so, of course,
it's only right that I shop there once in a while.
Right?

(At least, that's what I tell my Farmer when he discovers my new "stash".)

I loved the frame
but wasn't sure what I was going to do with what was in it.

Then I remembered that Donna at Funky Junk Interiors was having a burlap party
and I found some burlap in the attic.

Burlap is handy to have around
and attics deserve to keep some.

I took the picture out of the frame...
and cut the burlap slightly larger.

I sanded the frame.

I then put the metal piece wrapped in burlap back into the frame
carefully tucking and pulling
so that the burlap would be tight.

Gluing it would have been an option as well.

I decided I might ad some buttons to my picture.
Burlap and buttons.
That sounds so 70's doesn't it.
I love my old box of buttons:
my colorful tiny treasures.
I picked out different colors,
trying to imagine them as flowers.
I found this large brown one:
 a good nest, maybe?

Ooo, I have this growing love for this color blue.
What is it called?  Peacock?

I'm tempted to do my base cabinets in the kitchen with it;
I painted the inside doors of one this color
and another one with the green that I also like,
and I asked Violet which she liked.

She said,

"Oooo, I like them both.
I really DON'T KNOW."

You know they are both great when she doesn't know!

 A combination is pretty,
but maybe too much.

 I decided on white.

I sanded a side of the large button...
(Please excuse the green on my nails:
that is the possible cabinet color)

...and painted some eggs and twigs on it.

Can you tell I have a thing for birds and nests right now?
I adore hearing them singing their welcome to spring at this time of year!

I roughly painted the frame black,
painted a few tree branches with leaves
and a bird on the burlap,
and dabbed a little pink and yellow on the white buttons to make them look
a little more like flowers.

I could have stenciled the bird on,
if I had searched through my stencils in the attic,
but thought I'd just save time and paint one.

It's a long way up and down to the attic too many times
for one project.

I painted a sealer on the frame and buttons
and while that dried,
I lightly dry brushed a bit of brown in different places on the burlap
to make it look old.

I then placed the buttons where I wanted them on the tree limbs...
and used a little touch of glue gun to hold them in place.

 What a fun project...

and it is perfect over the mantle where I have been needing a new picture.
