Ground Beef and Gravy

Steer are givers of a lot of ground beef.

I am always looking for new ways to fix it.
If you have a great ground beef recipe,
I may just swap you something valuable for it.
Of course,"valuable" is a troublesome variable.

Are you in the market for a puppy?
We have one that is great at chewing.
He also likes shoes.
I found one of my favorite shoes on the porch the other day.
It was in three pieces,
or, at least I stopped counting at three.
I am assuming my shoe thief of a three-year-old decided to parade around in them,
and then got distracted by something else once she got on the porch.
It probably took him .05 seconds to sample my shoe.
They tag team, those two, I am sure of it.
Anyhow, I'm pretty sure I breathed the gasp heard round the world that day.
Yes.
Three pieces that were irreparably lacerated and laced with puppy tooth holes.

I went upstairs with the lone shoe
and sat in the closet and cried for the rest of the day.

Well, actually, I didn't have time because the two of them might leave me in total devastation
if I disappear for more than 5 minutes;
but I wanted to.
Anyhow, I have to whip up an excessive number of ground beef concoctions,
so I am always on the search for suitable entrees.

The easy ones usually make it onto our supper table
once a week or more.

Hamburgers, meatballs, sloppy joes, tacos, in cooked in spaghetti sauce...
but I also have a meat and gravy recipe that is super quick and easy,
and it works with ground pork, ground beef, or ground turkey.
I adapted it from my Fast and Healthy Cookbook
by Pillsbury.

Here it is:

Chop up some onion and mince up some garlic.

Place the ground beef in a skillet,
and add the onions and garlic,
stirring to brown.

Mushrooms may be added as well,
if you like them.

Broth joins in once the meat is browned;

and once that is hot,
some flour mixed in some milk...

is poured and stirred in.

A dash of pepper and some salt to taste,
and it's all ready to go on some:
rice,
mashed potatoes,
boiled potatoes,
 or couscous.

It is simple,
tasty,
quick,
and rather like a comfort food.

Comfort is a good place when you need something to calm your nerves
and make home feel peaceful.

Oh, and one more word of warning:

it is a horribly ridiculous error to think that a puppy will respect a feather pillow,
no matter how much you want his bed to be soft and warm.
Do not feel sorry for him and think he will respect your good intentions.

I will not disclose who made such a malfunction
in this household.

Suffice it to say, I should probably eat the other shoe as punishment...

but that might confuse and be a bad example to some cute faces around here.

Ground Beef in Country Onion Gravy

  1. My mother made something very similar when I was growing up. I have a quick recipe to share. It is a bit like shepherd's pie - but not. A pound or so of ground beef, browned with a small chopped onion a clove of garlic and then mixed with a can of tomato soup (or jar if make your own), about a cup of corn and two cups of kidney beans (pre-cooked or canned. While the beef is browning, boil a few potatoes and when they are cooked through, make a small batch of mashed potatoes. Place the meat mixture in a deep casserole dish and cover with a layer of mashed potatoes. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the top and bake at 350 until everything is heated through and the cheese is lightly browned. My family loves this and it is my "go to" recipe when I can't think of anything else for dinner!
